Limitation

Water over lake — measure as a form of order.

Abstract editorial artwork for Hexagram 60

Bound, and so unbrokenLimitation

What you can stop, you truly have.

Jie is water held by the lake — contained, not flooding. Its measuring is limit: not suppression, but letting what should exist exist and what should not multiply not multiply. Everything sustainable has measure: sleep, food, relationships, spending, speech. Jie also reminds: the excess is not richness but waste; what you guard is not less, but enough.

The judgment adds pointedly: bitter restriction cannot endure — measured to the point of misery, it is no longer right. Restraint that becomes self-torture has lost the meaning of degree. The measure of measure is keeping a margin of ease you can live inside.

Practice This week set one ceiling on a thing you overdo — screen time, sweets, shopping, socializing. See if the week actually feels better.
In the four domains

01Career & decisions

Acceptable limits make teams and companies function. Set the boundary — scope, budget, hours — early and keep it joyfully; a dike is protection, not punishment.

02Love & bonds

Loving limits beat limitless resentment. Agree on the small contracts — time, money, families — and keep them lightly.

03Wealth & resources

Budget is a verb. Cap the categories that bleed, automatically; freedom inside self-made walls is the only lasting kind.

04Body & mind

Regulate, do not deprive: fixed sleep window, fixed training slots, meals by the clock. The body trusts a kept measure.

Timing & action

Build one voluntary limit this week and hold it with good humor. Water that has a bank becomes a river; water without one becomes a swamp.
